How Hannes and Anja found balance at Mt Cotton
Published on 14 May 2026
When Hannes and Anja Bronkhorst moved their family from South Africa to Australia in 2017, they were searching for more than a new location – they were looking for a place where family, work and lifestyle could genuinely coexist. After settling on Redlands Coast in 2018, they quickly discovered it was exactly what they had been looking for.
Now living in Mount Cotton with their two children, Johandré (13) and Vivia (11), along with two dogs and a horse, the Bronkhorsts have built a life deeply connected to community, nature and opportunity.
A place that supports lifestyle and family
For the Bronkhorsts, Redlands Coast offered the rare balance of space, affordability and connection. After initially renting in Thornlands between 2018 and 2021, they purchased their first Australian home there in 2022 before recently moving to Mount Cotton.
The region stood out for its family-friendly feel – a place where life isn’t rushed and where children can grow up safely, actively and surrounded by nature. From local schools and parks to sporting clubs and church life at Gateway Redlands, the family quickly felt part of the community.
Outdoor living is a big part of their week, whether it’s fishing in the bay, mountain biking through Mount Cotton’s trails, horse riding, weekend sport or simple bay-side walks. Their Mount Cotton property even serves as a haven for local wildlife, including koalas – something they treasure.
Opportunity close to home
Redlands Coast has also proven to be an ideal base for building businesses. Anja runs her own private practice as a Christian counsellor, while Hannes owns two local businesses, Pro Blinds and Shutters and Pro Pool Builds.
Being centrally located means they can work locally while staying well connected to Brisbane and surrounding regions. For the Bronkhorsts, the ability to grow their businesses without sacrificing family time has been a defining advantage of living on Redlands Coast.
“You get so much more here – lifestyle, space and opportunity – without losing connection to the city.”
Community, nature and a sense of belonging
What truly sets Redlands Coast apart, however, is the sense of belonging. From friendly neighbours to lasting friendships and a strong church community, Hannes and Anja say there’s something unique about the people and the pace of life.
With the bay, islands, bushland, mountains and coastline all within easy reach, there’s always something to explore – often for free. Simple pleasures like picnics at Cleveland Point, bike rides in Mount Cotton or spontaneous coastal getaways have become part of everyday life.
