The partnership between Gifu University in Japan and Redland City Council is a long standing international education and exchange relationship that strengthens health workforce capability, global engagement and Redlands Coast’s international reputation.

Redland City Council has maintained a Cultural and Education Exchange relationship with Kani City and the Gifu region of Japan since 2015, creating the foundation for sustained engagement with Gifu University, particularly through its Medical Science Faculty.

As part of this relationship, Redlands Coast has regularly hosted delegations of Gifu University students, academics and representatives on structured study tours coordinated in partnership with the Australia–Japan Wildlife Conservation and Education Foundation (AJWCEF). These visits combine cultural exchange with practical exposure to Australia’s health system and regional communities.

About the Partnership

Gifu University is a nationally respected Japanese university with a strong reputation in medical education and research, including operation of a university hospital. Its Medical Science Faculty places a strong emphasis on international experience and global health system exposure.

Student delegations visiting the Redlands Coast typically participate in:

  • Briefings at Redland City Council Chambers
  • Tours of local health and aged care facilities, including Mater Private Hospital Redland and regional residential care providers
  • Engagement with local leaders, clinicians and community representatives
  • Cultural exchange experiences that showcase lifestyle and liveability

These visits are designed to provide students with insight into regional Australian healthcare delivery, community based services, and broader population health contexts.

“Overseas students taking part in these study tours also get to see what a great place Redlands Coast would be to live and work. How great would it be to welcome these same students back as highly skilled graduates working in our local health sector.”
— Redland City Mayor

Redlands Coast offers a compelling environment for international education partnerships.

Key advantages include:

  • A diverse, mixed health ecosystem spanning public, private and aged care services
  • A regional context that contrasts with major metropolitan hospitals
  • Proximity to Brisbane while retaining a strong community-based care model
  • High liveability, making the region attractive for future skilled migration

Redlands Coast leaders have consistently noted that international study tours also act as a soft workforce attraction mechanism, giving future graduates first-hand experience of living and working in the region.
